Shreveport, La – Services for Dr. Irwin Jefferson Rice, 69, will be held at 10:30 am Friday, December 2, 1988 at the St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Reverend J Frederick Patten, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, assisted by the Reverend Donald Heacock. Private Interment.
Dr. Rice died Thursday, December 1, 1988 at Schumpert Medical Center following a short illness. He was a physician – surgeon. He was a native of Oil City, La and a lifelong resident of Shreveport. Dr. Rice graduated from LSU School of Medicine, December 20, 1943, completed Internship, September 30, 1944 at Shreveport Charity Hospital, completed Junior Residency in Pathology, June 30, 1945 at Shreveport Charity Hospital, completed Assistant Residency in Surgery, June 30, 1948 at Shreveport Charity Hospital, completed Associate Residency in Surgery June 30, 1949 at Shreveport Charity Hospital, completed Surgery Residency, June 30, 1950 at Shreveport Charity Hospital, received his post-graduate degree in Surgery from Harvard University 1979 and 1984. He was a founder of LSU Medical Center School of Medicine in Shreveport. He was a member of the Shreveport Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Society, LSU Shreveport Surgical Society and graduated from the University of the South School of Theology May 27, 1984.
Dr. Rice was appointed Honorary Secretary of State, October 28, 1985 under Jim Brown. He was on the active staff at P & S Hospital and Schumpert Medical Center. Dr. Rice was on the courtesy staff at Riverside Medical Center and Bossier Medical Center. He was an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Dr. Rice was a captain in the Air Force Medical Corp and served overseas. He was a member of the Shreveport Country Club, Petroleum Club and the Shreveport Club. He was a member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Dr. Rice was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Emma Rice, and one brother, Vincent D Rice.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Jones Rice of Shreveport, sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall Carl Rice and Ellen, James Alexander Rice and Susan, Shreveport, Lane Jefferson Rice, all of Shreveport; one brother, Winston C Rice of Shreveport, seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Susannah, Mary Beth, Alex, Marshall, Joel and Martha Frances Rice.
