Civil War Union Army Soldier. Referred to as Percival for most of his life, he was one of 14 children of iron industrialist William Schall. After the outbreak of the Civil War he was mustered in as a Private in Company D, 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 20, 1861. The company was commanded by his older brother, Edward Schall, and the regiment's Major was another brother, Edwin (twin of Edward); 4 other brothers would also serve in the Union Army during the war. He served his regiment as official mail agent for the unit, was captured by Confederate forces, and spent time incarcerated in Richmond, Virginia's infamous Libby Prison. He participated in many of the regiment's many battles, and served in the field until he was honorably discharged on January 31, 1864.

After the war he joined the Regular Army, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 15th United States Infantry on February 23, 1866. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on April 23, 1867, he served until he resigned on May 14, 1868.

On October 24, 1871 he again joined the Regular Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D, 21st United States Infantry. He would go on to serve in the 21st Infantry from 1871 to 1889, and then serve in the 3rd United States Infantry from 1889 until his discharge on August 29, 1894. During his tenure he served as Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and in the Philippine Islands.
