A BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM SCOTT, by Laurence Overmire (3rd great grandson), genealogist and family historian, updated Jan. 2021:

William Scott was born Nov. 26, 1765, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the first of four children of immigrant and Revolutionary War veteran Patrick Scott and Lettice Denny.

His mother died when he was about 20. A year later his father took a second wife -- Martha "Mattie" Cotton.

William first married Lydia Dement and had three children:
1) Elizabeth (b. 21 Jun 1791)
2) Margaret (10 Feb 1793-1 Apr 1868, m. John Elliott)
3) Unknown male child (b. 1794, Mercer, Franklin Co., PA)

Presumably, Lydia died about 1794 when the last child was born.

At the age of 30, on Oct. 13, 1795, in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia), William Scott married for a second time to Elizabeth Coe, the daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Lt. Ebenezer Coe and his wife Eunice Jagger. They had 11 children, several of whom were born in West Alexander, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
1) Mary (1796-1852, m. Benjamin Paul)
2) Samuel (4 Aug 1798-18 May 1799)
3) Dr James S. Scott (1800-1881, m. Nancy Hammond, Susan Wright)
4) Eunice (b. 16 Oct 1802)
5) Phebe (1805-1854, m. Mark Finicum)
6) Ebenezer (1807-1841)
7) Nancy (1809-1886, m. Col. Daniel Carpenter)
8) Rebecca (1811-1897, m. David Shriver) Ancestors of the author of this sketch.
9) Silas (1813-1891, m. Phebe Parkison, Emeline Carpenter)
10) Martha (1816-1901, m. Andrew Coleman)
11) William R. (1818-1899, m. Martha Bigelow)

About 1805-1807, the family moved to Jefferson County, Ohio. William was a Presbyterian Elder in Ohio and later joined The Methodist Episcopal Church.

William kept a journal and expressed himself in poetry. The last entry, on page 77, was penned shortly before his death:

I was born in the year 1765
And now I stand on the
Crumbling shore near the end
Of my eighty eighth year
With a quivering hand and
Failing eyes I wait my time
In peace with all, friendship
With many, I bid Adieu to all.

On July 6, 1854, William passed away in Little Washington, Richland County, Ohio, at the age of 88. He was laid to rest in the Washington Village Cemetery there.
