Dr. Whitcraft graduated from Lincolnville High School in 1905. He earned his AB degree at Indiana University in 1914 and the AM degree at the University of Chicago in 1923. He received the PhD in mathematics at Columbia University in 1932.
His teaching career started in the rural schools of Wabash County. He taught at Roann and Freedom. From 1912 to 1914 he taught in Chippewa High School and Lagro from 1914 to 1920. Dr. Whitcraft taught at Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis from 1920 to 1924 when he came to Ball State to teach mathematics. He was head of the mathematics department from 1926 until his retirement in 1951.
He was the co-author of a set of algebra texts published by Bobbs-Merrill and wrote two books that were published by the Benton Review at Fowler.
Dr. Whitcraft was active in both the Indiana and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Indiana Academy of Science, NEA, Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana Schoolmen's Club, was the first sponsor of the campus chapter of Kappa Delta Pi honorary and president of Phi Delta Kappa in 1933.
Active in Muncie Kiwanis Club, Dr. Whitcraft also had been an elder, deacon and trustee of the First United Presbyterian Church. He represented Ball State in the United Fund and Red Cross drives for several years.
When Dr. Whitcraft retired in 1951 he became sales manager for the Largent Coal and Oil Co., a division of Hartley Coal and Oil, in Muncie. He returned to teach briefly at Ball State four years later.
In 1964 Ball State honored Dr. Whitcraft by naming a men's residence hall in the Studebaker-West complex for him.
