James A. Bedell enlisted in the 27th Maine Inf. on 30 Sept. 1862 at the age of 23. He died of disease less than
three months later. The 27th was the regiment that became
famous, or infamous, as the regiment that was awarded
Medals of Honor merely for extending thier enlistment.
In addition the majority of the regiment did not extent and
through an error were still awarded the prestigious medal.
James of course, having died before then, would not have been included in that error.
