Elisha Jefferson Colvin was born March 12, 1832, in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He traveled west with his older brother, Thomas S., then lived in either southern Oregon or California until about 1865 when he went to the Woodland, Washington area with another brother, Francis M. Colvin.
In 1866, Elisha married Amanda J. Gardner, daughter of Daniel and Lorena Gardner. He took out a homestead along the Cathapoodle River. Elisha and Amanda adopted a baby son, Perry O., in 1868. In 1881, they took in their nephew, Edgar Elisha Colvin, whose mother had died. They raised Edgar until he was a teenager.
Elisha, Amanda and the two boys moved to Ilwaco, Washington, where they lived for about eleven years. On March 26, 1892, Elisha was intiated into the I.O.O.F., and the opportunity came up for him to go to Walla Walla and manage the Odd Fellows home there.
Elisha died May 26, 1903 and is buried in the I.O.O.F. section of the Mountain View Cemetery.
After Elisha's death, Amanda continued at the home as both superintendent and matron in which position she received double wages. Amanda received a three-link badge with a diamond setting from the Grand Lodge I.O.O.F. and the Rebekah Assembly in appreciation of eleven years of service. In her last years, Amanda lived in Portland, Oregon, where she died October 26, 1924. She is buried beside her husband in Walla Walla.
