Hazel Elsie Mae (Wood) Gardner was born on May 9, 1910 in Corona, Riberside County, California, the daughter of Hall Henry Wood (1880–1942) and his 1st wife Nellie Veatrice Henry (1881–1974).
She grew up in Riverside County, and at the time of the 1830 census she was attending a Bible Institute in Los Angeles County. She later became a registered nurse.
Hazel was married in Glendale, Los Angeles County on December 29, 1935 as the 1st wife of James Franklin "Jim" Gardner (1908–1993), the son of James Hammond Gardner (1875–1940) and Adella Alice (Harris) Gardner (1881–1957). By the time of the 1940 census, the family was living at 1022 Griffith Street in San Fernando, and Hazel was a nurse in a local hospital, while Jim was listed as a carpenter in home construction. Hazel was a member of First Christian Church and was also the church's pianist.
After they retired, Hazel and Jim bought a mobile home and took up residence in Yucca Valley in high desert area of San Bernardino County, where they lived for 12 years.
Hazel was 71 years old and married when she passed away on January 13, 1982 at Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree.
Survivors included her husband in Yucca Valley, daughter Loretta Donnelly of Sylmar, California, son Donald James Gardner at Riverside, California, four brothers, three sisters and five grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on January 16th at First Christian Church in Yucca Valley, and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California.
