John was a son of John & Mary Bennis.
He was married on 11 June 1865 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts to Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" Langley. She was a daughter of Thomas Jeffers Langley & Lydia Thayer.
They had a son John F. Bennis, and a daughter, Lydia Mary Bennis who married John Joseph Close.
John was a shoemaker. He served in the Civil War. He enlisted on 30 July 1862 at Wellfleet, Massachusetts as a Private in Company I of the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry. He was discharged on 20 May 1865 at Falls Church, Virginia at the close of the Civil War.
He was in the 1850 census of Wellfleet, MA; the 1870 census of Braintree, MA; and the 1880 census of Weymouth, MA.
He was admitted to the Eastern Branch of the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Togus, Maine on 24 Mat 1892.
He died on 2 Feb 1904 of mitral insufficiency.
