From The Harvard Courier, June 14 1934, p.8, transcribed by Linda Berney:

Mrs. Julia A. Hiatt -

Julia A. Raney was born in Knox county, Illinois June 28, 1857 and died June 7, 1934 at her home in Harvard at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 10 days, following a lingering illness of almost three years duration. Most of that time she was an invalid.

She came to Centerville, Iowa with her parents in the early part of her life. On July 13, 1875 she married Joseph W. Hiatt of Centerville. He and four sons and one daughter survive her. They are Albert of Hastings, Delbert of Harvard, Mrs. Anna Murphy of Lincoln, Henry of Colorado and LeRoy of Harvard. One son died in infancy. She has two sisters and one brother living at Centerville, Iowa.

There are twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

She was a member of the Christian church of Harvard and all her life she lived a faithful and constant Christian life. She was a constant Bible student and deeply regretted the loss of her eyesight during the last months of her life, because she could not read her Bible daily. The memory of the blessed words were a comfort to her however and now she has passed to her reward.

Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt came to Clay county about 45 years ago where they have since made their home excepting for ten years of that time when they lived on a farm near Webber Kansas. The last four years they have resided in Harvard. Wherever they have lived, she made life long friends and will be long remembered by them.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church on Sunday, June 10, conducted by Rev. W. A. Alcorn. Burial at the Seaton ville cemetery north of Harvard.

The deep sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved family.

Those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hiatt and family of Colorado, Mrs. Anna Murphy and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Murphy and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Long and son, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hiatt and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Boge of Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. Untersear and family of Sutton, Mrs. Lillie Chesney, John and Francis of Formosa, Kansas, Mrs. Bert Springer and Mrs. Wm. Davenport of Superior and Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Long of Lincoln.
