Commie died before the age of forty of a following a respiratory illness. He and his wife, Ida, had six children: Grover, Reuben, Charlie Dean, Geneva, Jeanette and Dewey. Another child, John, was born December 21, 1933 and died July 13, 1934. The child's death certificate did not identify where he was buried, but it was likely Yellow Springs Cemetery.
He lived his entire life in the Springdale community of Claiborne County, Tennessee. His 1918 World War I Draft Registration card described him as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and dark hair. He did not serve in the military.
Youngest brother Clay remembered Commie as an excellent speller who participated in spelling bees. One of his sons remembered hearing his father was sometimes a substitute teacher for the local school.
The 1930 U.S. Census recorded Commie as a Springdale farmer who owned his home.
