Alton graduated from Lansing Eastern High School. He had many friends and was interested in sports. Baseball was the sport in which he excelled. After graduation He was employed at the Lansing Drop Forge and was a member of a farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball club. At the time he entered the Air Force he was given a contract with the Cardinals. In April of 1942 he enlisted in the Air Force. He had hoped to become a pilot but because of being too near another plane, while on a training mission, he was "washed out." he was then trained as a bombadier. On his first mission, over Burma, he was reported missing. The plane was never found. On 8 Apr 1946 he was declared dead, according to official word from the War Department. Alton also has a memorial in the family plot in the Woodlawn Cemetery, LaFollette, Tennessee.
