ST. JOSEPH - Martha "Jane" (Prindle) Atkinson, 92, of St. Joseph, passed away Dec. 22, 2009, at Lakeland Specialty Hospital in Berrien Center after a brief illness.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. A private burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Service, 7301 Red Arrow Hwy., Stevensville, MI 49127, where Jane worked for many years. Friends wishing to send a condolence may do so at the memory book at www.starks-menchinger.com.
Jane was born to Harold and Susan Prindle on Sept. 17, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio. She grew up in Illinois, graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with a double degree in biology and chemistry, and moved to St. Joseph in 1960. She was married to Dr. Robert Atkinson in 1943, who preceded her in death in 1979. Jane was a member of the First United Methodist Church of St. Joseph.
Over her lifetime, Jane had many interests and hobbies. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing the piano, golf and tennis. While her husband was in the military, they traveled throughout Europe and continued to travel extensively both in Europe and the U.S. after his duty ended. Few knew that she liked flying and earned her pilot's license during World War II, in her words, "just in case more people or help were needed." She also enjoyed her work in the medical field as a secretary and lab technician. Any acquaintance of Jane's knew of her love of cats, of which she had many (several of dubious character) during her lifetime. During the past nine years she resided at Lakeland Specialty Hospital, where she enjoyed going on trips they provided, reading and volunteering for the Lakeland Pharmacy. She was a remarkable woman who participated in all of these activities until a month prior to her death.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her nephew, John Atkinson.
She is survived by a niece, Caryl Atkinson of Texas, and special friends Nancy and Al Niemi of Chicago and Kay Schultz-Soper of Benton Harbor. She also is survived by the employees and friends on Unit E at Lakeland Specialty Hospital, whom she loved and considered her family. She will be dearly missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.
