"Josephus Martin, whose death occurred on May 11, 1888, was a son of Aaron Martin, of Salem, and his wife Elizabeth, (who was a daughter of Dr. Peletiah Fitch, of Salem,) and was born at Salem on April 7, 1796, and married on November 11, 1835, Lucy, a daughter of Henry and Patty Palen, and has resided since his marriage at the house on Fitch's Point formerly owned and occupied by Doctor Alfred Freeman.
His life was undeviating in its industry and integrity. At the time of his death he had attained nearly a century of age, reaching to his ninety-third year, and was the senior resident of this town. His wife survives him.
His children were: 1. Mary Eliza, who married Elijah Blashfield; 2. Aaron H., who married Libby S. Lewis, in Morrison, Illinois, and there died, greatly beloved, on March 18, 1887. He had served as a volunteer in the Civil War; 3. Lambert, who was also a volunteer in the U. S. service in the same war, and died in the service at Fort Sully, Dakota Territory, on October 14, 1863; 4. William R., who married first Eliza, a daughter of Peter B. Lant, of Argyle, and she dying he married, second Sarah, a daughter of George Wadsworth; 5. Martha Lucy, who married Horton Cottrell, of Easton, a son of John and Betsey (Dwelle) Cottrell.
