A BIOGRAPHY OF RAYMOND SCOTT SHRIVER, by Larry Overmire (great nephew), Sept. 2008:
Raymond Scott Shriver was the seventh of nine children of Albert Norton and Mary Belle (Burns) Shriver. He was born on the Shriver farm in Clear Creek, Ashland County, Ohio, on his father's 42nd birthday, Sept. 19, 1885. His middle name "Scott" was his paternal grandmother's maiden name.
Ray graduated from Savannah Academy in Savannah, Ohio, in 1907, and from Ohio Wesleyan in 1913, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity and played varsity football. From 1913-1915, he coached football at Ashtabula Harbor High School and then became Superintendent of Public Schools at Kingsville, Ohio. There he met Corinna Ruth Smith, the daughter of Charles R. Smith, who was the Chairman of the Board of Education. Ray and Ruth were married on Jun. 21, 1917, and had two children: Barbara Ruth and Philip Raymond.
In 1920, Ray transferred to the Cleveland Public Schools. He taught at South High School, retiring in 1955, as Director of Social Studies.
For a while, the Shrivers lived on Thornhurst Drive in Garfield Heights, just a short distance from Ray's little sister Anna Mary and her husband Irl Fast. Irl noted in his memoirs, "Ray and mother (Anna Mary) were always pretty close ever since he was her big brother and she was his kid sister."
After retirement, Ray and Ruth moved to Tampa, Florida, where their daughter Barbara was living. Ray passed away there at the age of 81 on July 3, 1967. He was buried in the Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida.
The descendants of Albert Norton and Mary Belle Shriver are indebted to Ray for saving much of the initial genealogical research for our family tree. An unknown family member did the original research which Ray passed along to his nephew Albert Townsend Shriver, who in turn compiled much of what we know of our ancestors.
