Jacob Alewine was the son of Ephraim Alewine (born about 1794). During the Civil War Jacob enlisted on September 3, 1861 at Camp Butler, South Carolina for the duration of the conflict. Pvt. Alewine served in Capt. H. H. Harper's Company of the McCalla Rifles, 14th Regiment South Carolina Infantry. His unit was later redesignated Company I, 14th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry.
Jacob's Civil War service record indicates he was wounded at Ox Hill, Virginia (about 20 miles west of Washington, DC) on September 1, 1862.
Pvt. Alewine was wounded a second time in July 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Jacob asked in his will that his executor and friend M. M. Campbell "mark my grave with a fit and suitable stone." His wishes were beautifully carried out.
