Civil War: Company H, 7th California Infantry

Peter Alexander Bossert (also: Bessert) was born in Pennsylvania the son of immigrants. His father was born in Alsace (France) and his mother in Ireland. Peter headed west to California during the Gold Rush. He married (unknown). Peter enlisted as a private at San Francisco, California, January 3, 1865, and was mustered into Company H, 7th California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco February 3. Private Bossert was mustered out with his company at Drum Barracks (Wilmington), California, March 30, 1866 (Orton, 788). After the war Peter settled in Santa Clara County (1880, 1892, 1894 Santa Clara Great Registers). Peter appears as a widower living at Almaden in the 1880 US Census. Peter filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Santa Clara County on August 1, 1889, and received application No. 721,072 and certificate No. 804,603. Peter, a carpenter by trade, was admitted to the Veterans Home of California at Yountville from his home at Gilroy, Santa Clara County, June 18, 1895. He left the Yountville veterans home at some point and returned to Gilroy, where he appears in the 1900 US Census. Peter later returned to the veterans home, where he died. Peter Alexander Bossert was buried in the home's cemetery.
