LUELLA BERDINE HEMINGWAY

Luella Berdene Hemingway, 97, passed on to eternal rest at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 1997. She was the youngest of 5 children of Charlie and Aagot (Hagen) Peterson, born September 15, 1899, in Hayfield, Minnesota, where she resided most of her lifetime. On September 15,1920, Luella and Porter E. Hemingway were married at the home of her parents, just 1/4 mile east of Hayfield. They made their home in Rochester, Mayville, and Mantorville, MN, before settling in Hayfield again in 1929. Porter died December 1, 1977. Their children, Betty, Richard and James all attended Hayfield schools. Luella, besides being a caring, loving mother, was always a willing helpmate in the business of her husband. Her biggest hobby was all her flower gardens, which she loved, but also grew bountiful vegetable gardens. Many people benefited from her handiwork, in crocheting, (doilies, afghans, etc.) quilting, rug braiding, and etc.

Mourning her loss besides her children, one daughter, Betty and husband , John Weeks, Bloomington, MN; two sons, James and wife, Phyllis Hemingway, Hayfield; Richard and wife, Shirley Hemingway, Taopi, MN; are 8 grandchildren and their spouses; 23 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and their families.

Luella was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hayfield, which enriched her faith in God, through the Holy Spirit and her Love for Jesus, her beloved Savior.

Friends may call from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at the church on Saturday, May 31, 1997. The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield, with Reverend Tom Anderson officiating. Soloist: Cleone Hemingway. Great Grandson Casket Bearers: Brandon Voigt, Beau Voigt, Rande Hemingway, Joshua Hemingway, Jonathan Weeks & Erik Weeks. Great Grandson Honorary Bearers: Andrew Hemingway, Jason Hemingway, Mark Weeks and Daniel Weeks. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield, Minnesota.

Notes from Shirley Hemingway: I have always enjoyed Grandma Lu. I've laughed with her and delighted in her stories of how she met Grandpa Port, their wedding, her father coming to America from Sweden and other family stories. The oral history I've gotten from her is priceless. Many people were fortunate to get plants and flowers from the famous Hemingway Garden. I treasure the day lilies, the variegated ribbon grass, the snow on the mountain and various rock garden plants that abundantly grow in my yard today. She warned me that some would "spread like weeds"...they did, but I love them all and still think of them as Grandma Lu's plants.
