D.N. Holmes, father of Philo Holmes, of this city, died Thursday the 21st, at the home of his son, whom he was visiting.

Obituary for Daniel Nathan Holmes

Rev. Daniel N. Holmes of Massenna, Iowa, died at the home of his son, Philo Holmes, in Fredonia, Kansas, July 21, 1887 while there on a visit. He was born the September second 1810 near Palmyra, New York. Early in life he joined the Methodist church. He became a member of the Genessee Conference from which he transferred to the Southeast Indiana Conference in 1849. He preached four years, filling Paris, St. Louis, and Burlington circuits. In the fall of 1858, he transferred to the upper Iowa Conference. He filled the following appointments: Cascade, LeClair, Centre Grove, Mount Vernon. In 1858 he was Elder of the Fort Dodge district. In 1862 he was sent to Waterloo, Iowa. He was again made Elder in 1868, of the Cedar Falls district. In 1868 he was appointed to Fayette. In 1868 he was a delegate to the General Conference. For two years following he labored on the Iowa Falls charge. This was his last regular work. He superannuated, was appointed Bible agent, and supplied other charges. His health gradually failed his last illness was of short duration, lasting twelve days. He calmly passed away.
