Obituary of William Richardson Chapline
Shepherdstown Register, Thursday, December 21, 1899,
Mr. William R. Chapline, one of Shepherdstown's oldest residents, was found dead in bed at his home in this place last Saturday morning. He had died some time during the night, and had passed away so quietly that it was not know just when the end came. Mr. Chapline was 79 years, 9 months and 26 days old. He had been in failing health for a long time, and the infirmities of old age pressed so heavily upon him that death came to him as a welcome relief. He was always a respected and exemplary man, and lived a quiet, honorable life. He was a member of the Lutheran church. He is survived by two sons and four daughters: John N. Chapline, at home; C.L. Chapline, of Harper's Ferry; Mrs. John Stipp of Shepherdstown; Mrs. Wm. H. Staley, of Belair, Md.; Mrs. James H. Rogers, of Hampshire county, W.Va.; and Mrs. Lillian Conklyn, of Sparta, Pa. The funeral service was held in the Lutheran church Monday morning, conducted by Rev. C.H. Rockey, and the remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery.
According to a representative of The Elmwood Cemetery Association interment records prior to 1912 were destroyed by fire. The ledger that is being used started in 1912. Their records show Lot 58 owned by W. R. Chapline (a lot holds 8 graves). There is only one interment listed. This is for John Nourse Chapline, son of William & Margaret Chapline. There is a small base in the ground where a small stone could have been located.
4/25/2013 Update: Thanks to Louise Benas for finding and photographing the marker for William R Chapline found in a stack of broken grave markers in the woods behind the cemetery.
6/15/2014 Update: In 2013 a small group of descendants of W.R. Chapline contributed funds for the restoration of his grave marker. Thanks to the Elmwood Cemetery Association for doing a wonderful job on the restoration which was completed in June 2014.
