Feb 2, 1973 Firefighter Arthur L. Ceurvels, 48, Ladder 20

He died from injuries he received when the Maxim ladder truck "jack-knifed" during a severe ice storm in the city on the icy roadway of the Southampton Street Bridge. Ladder Co. 20 was responding to Box 7311, (East Broadway near "H" Street). He had 26 years of service.

FIREMAN CEURVELS, 48, ICE ACCIDENT VICTIM

The funeral of Fireman Arthur L. Ceurvels, 48, president of the Associated Firefighters of Massachusetts (AFL-CIO), will be held Monday with a requiem Mass in St. Agatha's Church, East Milton, at 11 a.m.

Ceurvels, father of six, was injured fatally Thursday night when a ladder truck enroute to a blaze in Andrew sq., South Boston, skidded into the Southampton st. bridge. He died Friday at 8:45 a.m. at Boston City Hospital.

A veteran of U.S. Marine Corps service, he was appointed to the Fire Dept. Jan. 29, 1947.

He was a former president of Local 718, the Boston Fire Dept. local of the International Ass'n of Firefighters. He was an active member of the Society of St. Florian.

Ceurvels is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ann (Hurley); four sons, Arthur L., Jr., 24, Richard, 21, Joseph, 19, and Gerard, 12, and two daughters, Dianne Louise, 16, and Kathy, 9.

He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Anne (Ross) Ceurvels of Groton. He also is survived by five brothers, Roy of Dorchester and Henry of Arlington, Oscar of Dedham, and Boston Firefighters Joseph Ceurvels of Walpole, 29, and Robert M. of Burlington, and two sisters, Mrs. Murial MacMillian and Mrs. Dorothy McIsaac, both of Groton.

Visiting hours at the John K. O'Connor Funeral Home, 740 Adams st., Dorchester, will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday.

Fire Comr. James H. Kelly called the death of Ceurvels "another terrible tragedy that has befallen the Boston Fire Dept." He said all firefighters in the state would be saddened.

"Together the entire rank and file of the Boston Fire Dept." said Kelly, "I grieve for Mrs. Ceurvals and her six children."

Both Kelly and Mayor White cited Ceurvels' service in the association in behalf of his colleagues in the department. White said "Boston mourns the passing of Firefighter Arthur Ceurvals, who died tragically as the result of an accident en route to a fire this morning."

The mayor declared, "on behalf of the people of this city, for whom he gave his life, I extend my deepest sympathy to his friends and family."

Burial was in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
