JAMES A THOMAS was born near Blowhorn and was christened by the Rev. J. T. MORRIS on June 16, 1889 at the Providence Methodist Church in Lamar County. His father, JAMES THOMAS, deserted the family about 3 months before he was born.
When JAMES was about 4 years old, his mother, MARY ELLEN TRAYLOR THOMAS, married her first cousin, WILLIAM "BILLY" MILLER.
JAMES married GRACE AGNES SMITH, daughter of ISHAM JOEL SMITH and JERUSHA ANN MIDDLETON, on May 20, 1912 in Aberdeen, Monroe Co., Mississippi.
OBITUARY - "The Birmingham News", edition of Feb. 15, 1963:
Funeral services for JAMES ANDERSON THOMAS, age 74, of 112 65th Street North, were held today at Roebuck Chapel, with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.
MR. THOMAS died Thursday in a local hospital. He had lived in Birmingham 47 years. He was a member of Sixty-Seventh Street Methodist Church, Avondale Masonic Lodge, Zamora Temple, and had worked for the city of Birmingham in the Building Department for the past 19 years.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, MRS. E. M. FRANKS; two sons, RUBLE A and RALPH M THOMAS, all of Birmingham, and two sisters, MRS. W H FRANKS and MRS. E K GILMER, of Birmingham.
