2005: Catherine M. Tolman Teacher and administrator at Pembroke Academy
FRANKLIN -- Catherine M. Tolman, 83, of Pleasant Street, died Saturday, February
12, 2005, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
She was born in Franklin on February 23, 1921, the daughter of James and Helen
(Mullin) Sullivan. Mrs. Tolman attended local schools and was a graduate of
Franklin High School, class of 1940. She went on to study at the University of
New Hampshire, graduating in 1944 with a bachelor's degree in English. Mrs.
Tolman resided in Franklin most of her life.
She began her teaching career in Northampton, Massachusetts, and later taught at
Franklin High School. Mrs. Tolman then taught at Rippowam High School in
Stamford, Connecticut.
She was a teacher for several years at Pembroke Academy, where she was also
English Department Chairman. Mrs. Tolman retired in 1986.
She was a former trustee of Franklin Library and assisted with the Bookmobile
Program. She was a member of the former Catholic Daughters of America Court
Annie Nesmith and also the Webster Lake Association.
Mrs. Tolman was a communicant of St. Paul Church, where she served as a
Eucharistic Minister. Her husband, Merton H. Tolman, died January 30, 2004.
Family members include three children, Thomas J. Tolman of Northfield, Mrs.
Johannah Brown of San Antonio, and Carolyn Protzmann of South Berwick, Maine;
nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas J. Sullivan of
San Luis Obispo, California; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 8 a.m. at St. Paul Church in
Franklin.
Burial will be held at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Taylor Community, 435
Union Avenue, Laconia 03246.
