Matthias was a son of Irvin Scarborough and his wife Frances Cannon. He was born 15 December 1822 in Lawrence County, Mississippi. He married his first wife, Jemima Fountain while in Mississippi. He moved with his family to Louisiana, settling in Jackson Parish by 1850. He appears on the 1850 census of Jackson Parish, LA with his wife Jemima and three children. He was educated at Mt. Lebanon College in Bienville Parish and ordained a minister in 1854. He lived for a short time in Beaumont, Texas where he was pastor of one of the Baptist churches but returned to Louisiana in 1857, settling at Fort Jesup in Sabine Parish. He moved to Spanish Lake in 1859 and established an academy at Bethel which flourished until the War Between the States, when most of the students enlisted in the Confederate Army. The Academy was later burned. His first wife Jemima died during this time and she was buried in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Natchitoches Parish, LA. Matthias' brother Josiah Scarborough and their mother Frances Cannon Scarborough were also buried in Old Bethel Cemetery.
