Cpl. Miguel A. Suarez was a 2000 graduate of Jefferson High School. He enlisted in the Marines in 2002 and it was like a second family to him. He dreamed of being in the Secret Service one day. Miguel was born in Mexico City and moved with his family to Tampa when he was 9. The quiet boy stayed out of trouble but despite his quiet demeanor, he quickly won friends at school and among the other members of the Tampa battalion and their families. He never complained about hard work and was always quick to volunteer for extra duties. He would volunteer to participate in the Marine's color guard that attends funerals for local veterans. Miguel had been in the Marine Corps four years. He served one combat tour in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and another in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. He had been spending time at home with his mother and father after serving 16 months in the Middle East and Afghanistan. He worked at MacDill Air Force Base, awaiting orders to return to Iraq. During his previous eight months in Afghanistan, he worked in an armory, doling out weaponry to the infantry. While in Iraq, he was in charge of security for a small town. He survived the constant threats from insurgents in Iraq and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. It was a world away from roadside bombs and rocket-launched grenades that Miguel who was home on leave visiting with his parents, was shot by a robber. He was 25.
