He enlisted as a Private in Lewis Minor Coleman's Company of Artillery in 1861. He was captured 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania and received as a prisoner at Fort Delaware nine days later. He was administered the Oath of Allegiance on 19 June 1865 and released. He was then described as a resident of Hanover, standing 5 feet and ten inches tall, with brown eyes , dark hair and a ruddy complexion.
