Irene graduated from Framingham State Normal School in 1928 and received her BA in Education from Bridgewater State College in 1960. She was an elementary and middle school teacher between 1928-1969 at Sterling, Watertown, Mashpee and Yarmouth, Massachusetts, except for 1944-1947, when she was superintendent at the Lutheran children's home in Avon.

Among her many friends were Ebba Engstrom, Ebba Nelson, Elsa (Anderson) Rose, Alma Timper, Linnea Hallgren, Helen Lund and Clara (Rasmussen) Anderson.
