Resident of this section 62 years died Sunday night
Mrs. Savilla Wolfgang, widow of the late Isaac Wolfgang, a resident of this place for sixty two years, and truly a pioneer resident of what later became Sykesville borough, died at midnight last Sunday night in the Maple Avenue hospital in DuBois. The cause of death was bowel obstruction.
For a period of nearly four months the aged lady had been in failing health and two weeks before her death was compelled to take her bed. Physicians of this place, Reynoldsville and Falls Creek did their utmost to relieve her suffering. In the Maple Avenue hospital, to which institution she had been removed last Saturday afternoon, a last effort was made to prolong her life and had promise of success until an hour before her death.
Deceased was born near Eleanora Shaft on February 18, 1864, the daughter of Elijah and Rebecca Shaffer Zufall. One year later the family moved to what is now Sykesville borough and established one of the first homes in this valley. On May 11, 1866, in Brookville, Savilla Zufall became the bride of Isaac Wolfgang who also established a home here. Seven children were born to this union, but three surviving: Mr. Wolfgang died in this place, October 28, 1905.
Deceased was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in this place and was held in high esteem by her neighbors and legion of friends. Funeral services were conducted in the M.E. church by her pastor Rev. W.L. Updegraff, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The pastor selected the words of his text from Paul's epistle to Timothy, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith," and likened the life of the deceased to the message of the Apostle Paul to Timothy. Members of the Methodist choir sang several appropriate hymns. The pall bearers were: W.L. Reed, J.C. Shaffer, J.E. Crooks, George and Ivan Null and Claude Mowrey. The flower bearers were: Mrs. John Gould, Mrs. Arthur Fye, Misses Marion Allen and Erma Frantz. Burial was made in the Sykesville cemetery.
Surviving the deceased are two sons and one daughter: Merle and Mrs. Henry Reckie of this place and Roy Wolfgang of Niagra Falls, N.Y. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters: Leonard Zufall and Mrs. Christina Walker of this place, Mrs. Samuel Fye of Soldier; and Henry Zufall of Mt. Pleasant.
Friends to come from a distance to attend the funeral were: Roy Wolfgang of Niagra Falls, N.Y.; Mrs. David Estes of Indiana, Mrs. Wm. Clark, Mrs. Howard Perry and Miss Eliza Reekie of Pittsburgh.
