Funeral services for Mildred Estelle Newman Walker, age 92, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Travis Grimsley officiating. Mrs. Walker passed away on Monday, September 9th, 2013. Burial will follow at Rocky Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Walker was born March 10, 1921 in Gibson, TN, the youngest child of the late John Berton and Sena Vica Ethridge Newman. She graduated in 1941 from Beech Bluff High School, where she was an exceptional basketball player and Captain of the team. During her senior year, she was awarded the "Best All Around" basketball player trophy in the district during tournament play at Chester County High School in Henderson, TN. At Beech Bluff, she met her high school sweetheart, Carl Edward Walker, whom she married November 25, 1945 after Mr. Walker returned from serving in the Army during World War II. They were married for 53 years when he preceded her in death on May 9, 1999.

Mrs. Walker was an active member of the Bemis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church until her health declined, and was a Gray Lady Volunteer for over fifteen years at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Walker also volunteered at the Hospital Gift Shop.

Mrs. Walker loved and took care of her family. Everyone will always remember her home cooked meals and her delicious home made pies that she made for friends and neighbors.

Survivors include her son, Ronald Edward Walker; her daughter, Wanda K. Lee and husband Wayne; four grandchildren, Amanda Sue Roe and husband Paul, Jason Edward Lee and James Matthew Lee, all of Jackson, and Justin Wayne Lee of Nashville, TN and three great-grandchildren, Parker and Presley Roe, and Carl Alexander Lee, all of Jackson. She is also survived by six step-grandchildren and a special niece, Miss Betty Edwards of Jackson.

Pallbearers to serve will be her grandsons and her nephews, Jerry, Kenneth, Bobby and Jimmy Newman.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse Jackson.
