Amanda Minor Burchett
Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: Mar. 9, 1860
Mercer County
West Virginia, USA
Death: May 17, 1932
Mercer County
West Virginia, USA

The daughter of Isabel Elizabeth Bailey and Thompson Minor.

She was married twice, the first husband was George Paris Scott.

The second husband was Gilford Burchett.

Amanda's death was noted in a brief mention under the heading of "Rock, WV", with a Ms. Blanche Vest as correspondent, in the Bluefield paper. She was said to be 72, and had been ill for several months. There are discrepancies between the names and dates within her paragraph and those on the records available.
The first husband is given to be M.P. Scott, and the second Gilford Burchett.
Her funeral was conducted by the Reverend Garland Anderson, said Ms. Vest (perhaps the same clergyman who conducted marriages for this family).

Below is information from the marriage records:

Marriage record, Mercer county, WV -
Geo P. Scott born Giles county, Va. and Amanda Minor, born Mercer county, WV, ages 15 and 14,
both single, son of WR+Mary E.,
and daughter of Thompson + Elizabeth,
22 Feb.1875, performed by APL French, who seems to have performed a marriage for one of his own family and recorded it two lines below that where Amanda's marriage was written. The ages of George and Amanda from this year would match up with their ages given later on the MCC 1880.

Marriage record, Mercer county, WV -
Lawson G. Burchett, born Surry county, North Carolina and Amanda Scott, born Mercer county, WV.
Their ages were 34 and 33, both widowed.
His parents were Lawson and Elizabeth.
Hers were Thompson and Elizabeth MINOR: 8 Sep 1893.
This marriage was recorded by John H. Honaker.

Amanda had at least five children, if the surviving named in the newspaper were correctly listed.
Mr. Burchett was said to have died several years previous.
Survivors were three daughters, Mrs. I.W. Kinzer of Oak Hill, Mrs. J. A. Gardner of Springton, Mrs. R.L. Vest of Freeman; two sons, S. P. Scott of Powhatan, and Marvin Burchett of Rock, brothers Peter Minor of Pocahontas and Samuel Minor of Smith, as well as sisters Mrs. Louisa Collins and Mrs. Sallie Taylor of Virginia, and Mrs. Jennie Taylor of Montcalm.

Her death record bears her name as "Mandy Burchett".
There was not a designated informant on the death certificate, likely the attending physician acted in that case.
It gives her burial place as Rock, but some family say she was buried at Woodlawn with her second husband (perhaps because his death certificate says Woodlawn, though he also may have been buried at Rock).
The Miss Vest writing for the Telegraph gave burial place as a family cemetery "near the home".
