In his youth in Peoria, Illinois, Lynch Conway was a gifted athlete. He was the star player on Illinois' first high school state champion basketball team (Peoria High School, in 1908) and the only African-American to play on a state title team until 1949. Conway continued his athletic career at Bradley University and later worked for Peoria as a city engineer.
Conway married Mamie (or Mayme) Harris, a nurse, on October 10, 1919, in Cook County, Illinois. She survived him. They apparently had no children.
