Born 25 June 1870 in Hillsboro, WI (as captured most records, but listed as 25 June 1873 in his 1918 WW-I draft registration); Eugene was the second of three children {one son & two daughters} born to Wiram Aratus & Eliza Jane (Crawford) Knowlton.

In 1896, his initial venture into politics proved unsuccessful when he lost as an candidate for the Office of the Wisconsin Secretary of State representing the Prohibitionist Party.

On 24 May 1893, Eugene first married Lizzie Belle Wood in Pierce County, WI; he was age 22, she was 31. Born 11 April 1862 in Rosco, IL; she was the youngest of three children born to Sabin O. & Mary Jane (Warner) Wood. Lizzie Belle & Eugene ultimately divorced (some time after 1910) but had no children.

Eugene was a successful career musician (& teacher, composer & conductor). He studied at the Liepzig and Berlin Conservatories, 1903-1906. In 1910, he was a music teacher in Toledo, OH (where the Maumee River enters Lake Erie -- see below). He was Director of the Toledo Conservatory of Music (ca. 1914).

On 14 February 1916, Eugene second married Alvina A. Eckes at the Cathedral Residency in Saint Paul, MN; he was age 45, she was 27. Born 23 March 1888 in Wahpeton, ND; she was the second of four children born to William Frederick & Maria Katherina (Braun) Eckes. Eugene & Alvina had no children.

In 1918, he was President of the Saint Paul (MN) Musical Academy & conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony, 1924.

He moved to Portland, OR (circa 1924) where he taught music and formed choirs & choral groups for many different local towns before forming his own opera company -- The Portland Opera Company.

In 1928, Eugene authored of "Wakuta: American lyric opera in IV acts." In 1941 he composed of "On the Maumee River".

By 1930, he was living in Oregon where he & wife, Alvina were musicians with their own studio. He composed four operas during the 1930's that were performed around the country. They included "Wakuta", "Winona", and "Montana".

All of his operas had American West and/or American Indian themes which proved very popular. He also composed several symphonies, songs & cantatas.

Eugene died at age 71.
