LAKEWOOD - James Joseph "River Jim" Endris Sr., 71, of Lakewood, died 9:13 p.m. Monday (Sept. 23, 2002) in Decatur Memorial Hospital
No services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials: Decatur Memorial Hospital Family Lodge, in care of DMH Foundation.
Mr. Endris was born in Pana on Nov. 7, 1930, the son of Paul August and Hildegard Rose Sahr Endris. Jim graduated from Pana High School, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he carried mail in Pana during the 1967 ice storm. "River Jim" spent his youth hunting and fishing with his uncles and friends in the Kaskaskia River Bottoms. As a young adult, he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America. He taught his children to respect and value the land and the gifts of nature. Jim learned the craft of carpentry from his uncle, Max Sahr, and he resided in the cabin that he crafted by hand on the banks of the Kaskaskia in Lakewood near the old Lance Foor Boy Scout Camp and his grandfather August Sahr's cabin. He hunted, trapped and fished. He was a great cook and baker of bread. He married Dolores J. "Putzi" Horsthemke of Pana on Aug. 24, 1954.
Surviving are his daughter, Marjorie A. Sawicki and husband Joe of Belleville; sons, James J. Endris, Jr., and wife Lois of Springfield; and Henry P. Endris and wife Melinda Wehrle of Cowden; grandchildren, Matthew Sawicki, Sgt. Joseph Endris, Paul and Michael Endris; brother, Bernard Endris and Mary Lou of LaCrosse, Wis.; sister-in-law, Elsie Tuetken and husband Paul of Pana; aunt, Zona Sahr of Pana.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 27, 1986, son, Thomas P. Endris of Cowden, and sister, Carmen LaCrosse-Smith of Pana.
