Marion Harrison Dyer was the second son of three born to Anderson T. and Rachel (Hubbs) Dyer. Marion's father died from a head injury sustained in a fall from a horse in 1844 when Marion was very young. Marion's mother, Rachel, re-married quickly and provided a father for her 3 young sons in Mr. Lawson Damewood. Marion attended school and worked on the family farm, he married Rachel Atkins in 1858. The young couple lived and farmed in Union County, TN near Maynardville. The couple raised 6 children: John, Eliza, Rachel, Andrew, James and Phoebe.
Marion's wife, Rachel, passed away in 1894 and a few years later he married Sarah Faust. Beginning in 1907, Marion was in and out of the Veteran's home in Johnson City, TN. He suffered from heart disease and was somewhat disabled by it, he lost his battle in June 1924 at age 84.
Marion served as a private in the 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry (USA), Company B, during the Civil War. His brother James also served.
