One of the foremost lawyers of his time. He was Commonwealth Attorney for Hanover County and a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1902. Known for his humor, he had an immense practice and was a formidable adversary in court. The resident of Amherst County, Virginia joined Company G of the 1st Virginia Cavalry when he was eighteen years old at Hanover. He was 5'10 1/2". He had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, then confined at Point Lookout, being released on 24 June 1865.
