MT. BALDY - John L. McCallum, longtime member of the Upland Rotary Club, died Nov. 30 at his home in Denver. He was 67.
McCallum was actively involved in numerous Upland and Mt. Baldy organizations including Upland Rotary since 1972 and the Mt. Baldy Volunteer Fire Department.
He was also member of the boards of directors for San Antonio Community Hospital and the Upland Bank.
"He was one of the good guys," said Chuck Keagle, McCallum's friend of 40 years. "He was very highly respected. I just haven't heard anybody say a bad thing about him."
McCallum was an optimist who stayed positive all the way to the end, Keagle said.
"I think it's always good even in the worst of times to have somebody that is very optimistic about what the future is, and that was John," Keagle said.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate John McCallum's life from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sycamore Inn, 8318 Foothill Blvd., Rancho Cucamonga.
McCallum was born April 28, 1942, at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland. He graduated from Upland High School in 1960. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1964.
In the early 1970s he co-founded a local CPA firm, Reardon & McCallum, with former Upland Treasurer Walt Reardon, who died this year.
McCallum later left the firm to operate his own forensic accounting service from his home in Mt. Baldy.
He split his time in recent years between his home in Mt. Baldy and a home in Denver that he purchased to be close to his daughter, Wendy McCallum and family.
"He was just that guy. He was a father and a grandfather to the very end," said Wendy McCallum, John McCallum's daughter. "Although he was well respected in the Inland Empire, I think that if you were to talk to him what he was most proud of was the fact that he was a great father and grandfather."
"His eyes would light up when he started talking about his children and his grandchildren," Keagle said. "Scott and Wendy, that was John's universe.
"He was a truly, truly a good person, so he will be very very sorely missed in this community," Keagle said.
