Martha Virginia Good Reece, daughter of Dr. John D. and Rachel S. Good, was born in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., on Feb. 23, 1926. Both parents, sister, Lora McGraw and brothers, John and Ray Good and her husband, Rev. Rolland R. Reece, preceded her in death.
Martha graduated from Johnstown High School in Johnstown, Pa., in 1943 and from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio in 1947, where she majored in Fine Arts and received a minor in Speech and Drama. Her highest artistic honor came when she was asked to draw a pencil portrait of then Otterbein president, Dr. J. Gordon Howard for the 1946 yearbook, the Sybil. Martha also painted a copy of The Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima which hangs in the stairway of the Summit County Veterans Service Office, where she was employed for 18 years as the receptionist from 1972 to 1990.
Her interest in drama was best indicated by her roles in two Shakesperian plays at Otterbein and her activity with the United Methodist Players drama group of Akron for many years, where she both acted in and helped direct plays.
Martha met Rolland R. Reece at Otterbein and they married on August 31, 1947. She directed and produced plays at the various churches Rolland served as minister.
Martha and Rolland had four children: Christopher D. (Carol Bernard), John S. (Louise McAdams), Faye G. (Elizabeth Schlosser) and Barbara. There are eight grandchildren also surviving: Eva, Stella, Robert, Matthew, Leslie, Gabriel, Nadine and Samuel.
In lieu of flowers, Martha would prefer you to place a live plant somewhere on your property in her memory, or contribute to the Copeland Oaks Life Care Fund.
