On May 18, 1936, Detective Sergeant Lyman A. Armstrong, DSN 0066, was commissioned as a "Special Officer." After graduating from the department's academy, he was assigned to the Traffic Safety Division on November 1, 1936. On October 1, 1939, he was transferred to the Central District at 1200 Clark Avenue. On January 12, 1948, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and remained in the Central District. He was promoted again on November 21, 1953, to the rank of Sergeant and remained in the Central District for a short time before going to the 1st District on March 18, 1954. On September 16, 1957, he went to work for the Bureau of Investigation as a Detective Sergeant. On February 13, 1962, he went back into uniform as a Line Platoon Sergeant in the 3rd District on Lynch Street. Detective Sergeant Armstrong went back to the Bureau of Investigation on 07/28/1965 in the Burglary and Robbery Division at Headquarters at 1200 Clark Street. During his career, he was awarded 4 Letters of Honorable Mention on March 26, 1948; February 9, 1951; August 1, 1952; and September 12, 1952, for police work above and beyond the call of duty.

At the time of his death, he was an active-duty detective sergeant with the department. Detective Sergeant Armstrongs' last day of work was January 2nd, 1968, as he had been complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. He was subsequently admitted to Firmin-Desloge Hospital on South Grand.

Detective Sergeant Armstrong died last night of lung cancer at the Firmin Desloge Hospital on South Grand. He was 60 years of age. He had been ill for some time. 

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise (nee Vaughn) Armstrong of the home at 75 Willmore Avenue in Saint Louis, Missouri; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Cole of Chicago, Illinois; and a brother, Louie Armstrong of Detroit, Michigan.

Funeral services for Detective Sergeant Lyman A. Armstrong will be held at the Hoffmeister Mortuary, located at 6464 Chippewa Avenue. Services will conclude at the mortuary as the remains will be cremated at Valhalla Cemetery on St. Charles Rock Rd.
