Died while a POW held at Salisbury NC

Nathan Smith was born in 1826 in Marlboro NH the son of Martin and Grace (Childs) Smith. He was married to Rosetta Whitcomb daughter of Asa and Olive (Buzzell) Whitcomb in 1849, Nathan and Rosetta had five children and lived with their family in East Rindge. He was 36 yrs old when he enlisted with the 6th NH Regiment in Co. K. He was reported missing in action on August 29th 1862 at Bull Run VA. He was later recovered from missing and survived his term of enlistment. In Jan 1864 Nathan re-enlisted for the duration of the war. On September 30 1864 he was captured and taken prisoner at Poplar Springs Church, VA. Ultimately he was detained at the Confederate prison in Salisbury NC, where he died of disease and starvation on January 8th 1865. Nathan is interred in the US Veterans cemetery near the site of Salisbury Prison.
