On 23 September 1862, Nathan was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. During the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on 6 May 1864, Nathan was captured and sent to South Carolina to become one of the 600 Confederate Officers to be placed at Morris Island in South Carolina to be used as human shields. Union troops did this to prevent from being under fire by Confederate Batteries during August 1864. This group was later called the "Immortal 600".
Nathan was released from prison at Fort Delaware, Delaware on 16 June 1865 upon taking the Oath of Allegiance. He was described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, ruddy complexion, blue eyes and light hair. His pension card is listed in Marshall County, Alabama. Pension #16185.
