Birth: Jun. 14, 1898
Placer County
California, USA
Death: Aug. 5, 1918, France

James was born at home at "Pioneer Ranch" in Virginiatown, a few miles from Lincoln, and grew up there. "He had a natural liking for horses, which he displayed from the time he was a boy; he knew all the horses in the neighborhood and displayed a keen interest in their well-being." At the age of 19, he enlisted in Company D 4th United States Engineers, for service in World War I. While at the front somewhere near the Vesle River, his detachment ran out of food. He volunteered to go looking for rations, hitched a cart of two horses, and set off. He was successful on his first run. Sadly, returning on his second trip, a shell burst under his cart and horses, killing both the horses and himself. He was the only soldier from Lincoln to be killed in France. "After the war, the body was disinterred and brought back to his home, and was buried with military honors in the Lincoln cemetery." His mother, Mrs. Bell Fagg Fowler, kept his saddle horse, saddle, and bridle. A local American Legion named their post "Jim Fowler Post" in young Jim Fowler's memory. He was just 20 years old.
