Lyric Coloratura Soprano. Loli had a beautiful soprano voice. Fritz Kreisler said of her: "It is not only a lovely voice, but the eveness of her scales----the best I have heard in over twenty years." She was born in New Jersey of Franco-Italian heritage, her father emigrated from Italy and her mother's father emigrated from France. Her mother was Anne H. Butcher (daughter of Adrian and Martha (Hill) Butcher) who was married to Joseph DePuglia and later married Sidney Rusack. Dolores had an older sister, Mary Frances (DePuglia) Patterson, two brothers, Gaston DePuglia and Joseph DePuglia (and a sister Ann who died as an infant). From a very young age, her musical abilities were evident; she studied piano as a child and appeared in her first concert at the age of seven. She also had a magnificent voice, and was chosen to represent Vineland High School in the New Jersey All State chorus when she was only 16 years old. She appeared at the New York World's Fair in 1939, and later became a guest on many radio programs. She sang in five languages, and spoke three of them fluently. Loli lived for over 40 years in the Osborne Apartments on 57th Street in New York City. She sang in many night clubs, including one called "The Piccolo Club" that this writer remembers visiting as a child. Loli was rather short in stature, with dark flowing hair, piercing eyes, and a great theatrical presence. She composed songs and what she called "Vignettes" which had the flavor and nostalgia of her French and Italian background. She was a wonderful cook, and despite the tiny size of her kitchen, could put together any number of Italian dishes that were "to die for". She was briefly married a man with the last name of Pollini, but almost always went by her family name of DePuglia of which she was enormously proud. She had a terrier named Tuffy who was a great companion to her. Loli was one of the most unforgettable people I've ever met. She died in the city she loved in 1998.
