Julie R. Jacks
Miss Julie Rochelle Jacks, 26, a Police Officer of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, May 6, 2002, when she was shot in the line of duty.
A former Jefferson resident, Miss Jacks was a daughter of Frank Jacks, Ooltewah, Tenn., and Becky Ferguson Jacks, Chattanooga, Tenn., also both formerly of Jefferson.
She was a graduate of UTC, with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Miss Jacks had three years of service with the Chattanooga Police Department and was named "Rookie of the Year" in 2001. She was a member of Tyner United Methodist Church.
Friends described Miss Jacks as an "outstanding" officer and person. UTC Criminal Justice Professor Roger Thompson grew very close to her and said, "It's very sobering, when you think of how young, not only how young of a life, but what talent was there and to think about the sacrifice."
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Highland Park Baptist Church, Tennessee, with the Rev. Dennis Newman, Chief Jimmie Dotson and Bill Liverman officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East, Tennessee, with all law enforcement agencies in the region serving as active and honorary pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her fiancÚ, Bobby Moses Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.; paternal grandmother, Maudie Kay Jacks, Clearwater, Fla.; maternal grandparents, Ray and Dorothy Ferguson, Winder; sisters, Ashley Jacks and Ginger Swilley, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; niece, Allie Swilley, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and nephew, Ethan Swilley, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 910 Blackford Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403.
The family was to have received friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
