Granville William Cowan was the son of Carroll Andrew Cowan and Veda Lucy Keller.

On November 1, 1941, in San Marcos, Texas, Granville married Geneva Jane Byles.

Granville attended officer's training school in Corpus Christi, Texas. In the fall of 1942 he graduated, an officer in the United States Navy. He was lost in the Pacific Ocean on August 10, 1945 near Honshu, Japan during a raid while stationed with Halsey's fleet.

Granville and Geneva had one son: Phil Ray.

There is another memorial marker for Lt Cowan located at Honolulu Memorial Cemetery.
