Birth: Sep. 24, 1814
Belmont County
Ohio, USA
Death: Oct. 21, 1899
Burr Oak
Noble County
Indiana, USA

Mary, a daughter of John Painter and his second wife Rachel Redd, was born in Belmont County, Ohio, as the family migrated from Virginia to Richland County, Ohio. She was brought up on the Painter family farm in the county's Perry Township.

Mary Painter and Jeremiah Huntsman were married about 1833 in Richland County. (The Huntsman family, from Pennsylvania, were also early settlers of Richland's Perry Township, by way of Belmont County.) The couple had 10 children; 7 girls and 3 boys--all born in Ohio in Perry Township, or in nearby Franklin and Congress Townships now in Morrow County, Ohio.

In 1864, the family of Jeremiah and Mary Huntsman migrated from Morrow County about 160 miles northwest to Noble County, Indiana.

Date of Birth

Mary Painter Huntsman was born probably in 1814, not 1816. Although her obituary says she was "born in Belmont county, Ohio, September 24, 1816," this date is less than 5 months prior to her sister Lydia's reliably reported birth date, 3 February 1817. (Another sister, Elizabeth, may have been born between Mary and Lydia.) Also, according to a Noble County, Indiana, death records index, Mary Huntsman died on 21 October 1899, aged 85 years--thus born in 1814. For the 1850 through 1880 censuses, 1 June was the official census date. One's age was to be reported as of that date, regardless of the actual enumeration date. Since Mary was born in September, the four censuses indicate she was born in either 1814 or 1815. Lastly, the family of John Painter, Mary's father, migrated west through Belmont County, Ohio, but by 1816 had settled in Richland County, Ohio, on the 160 acres he had entered on 1 December 1814.

Notes

Not married in Knox Co., Ohio. The volume of Richland Co. marriage records, covering about 1826 through 1833, was lost long ago.

1840 U.S. Census, Franklin Twp., Knox Co., Ohio; p. 391 (line 17): Jeremiah Huntsman. Males under 5, 1 / 30-40, 1 // Females 5-10, 1 / 20-30, 1.
The census date in 1840 was 1 Jun. Since George Huntsman was not born until Oct 1840, the male aged under 5 is likely the third son indicated in Mary Huntsman's obit. (and who would have died before the 1850 census).

Congress and the western half of Perry Townships, Richland County, and Franklin Township, Knox County, were transferred to the new Morrow County on 24 February 1848.
