Cooperstown's Oldest Resident, Peter M. Delaney, Dead at 107

Freeman's Journal October 24, 1979

Otsego County's oldest resident and the oldest person believed known for miles around, Peter M. Delaney, of 49 Susquehanna Avenue, Cooperstown, died Sunday, Oct. 21 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, following a brief illness at the age of 107[His age at death was in fact 106.].

Mr. Delaney, a native of Ireland, was born June 29, 1873 in Tomard, County Carlow, Ireland, the son of John and Kathleen (Fitzpatrick) Delaney.

In 1910 he came to Cooperstown and began working for the late F. Ambrose Clark at his Elk Street Stables. He was employed by the Clarks for more than 50 years. He later worked at the Carriage and Harness Museum from the time it was first established until on Elk Street in 1967. He retired from the museum on his 100th birthday, June 29, 1973. He was Supervisor of the Harness Room at that time. He was feted in honor of his retirement at a party given at the Museum by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen C. Clark, Jr. His retirement is listed in the History of Cooperstown.

He married Margaret Crowe on June 8, 1915 in the Church of St. John the Evangelist in New York City. She died Sept. 13, 1962.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by one son, Peter M. Delaney, Jr., his wife Eileen, and three grandchildren.

Mr. Delaney was a regular at Senior Meals luncheons provided by Opportunities for Otsego held in the basement of the Baptist Church on Elm Street in the Village. Every year for the past several years the group would celebrate Mr. Delaney's birthdays with him with a special luncheon and cake and ice cream.

A mass of the resurrection was offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 at St. Mary's Church om Cooperstown by the Rev. John R. Sise.

Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

Funeral arrangements were by Ingalls, Connell and Down Funeral Home, Cooperstown.
