Husband Accused In Baxley Murder

BAXLEY—The husband of a woman slain at her home here early Friday has been arrested and charged with her murder, said Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach.

Jonathan Courson, 26, was taken into custody about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Deloach. He was being held in the Appling County Detention Center without bond, he said.

Mandy Courson, 28, was killed early Friday. Her husband told law enforcement officials that two men broke into the residence about 4 a.m. and tied them up in separate rooms, said Deloach.

An investigation has led lawmen to believe Jonathan Courson was the one who killed her, said Deloach.

Deloach said the Appling County Sheriff's Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation secured an arrest warrant about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, that the warrant was served around 8:45 and that the suspect was taken into custody without incident, the sheriff said.

Judicial proceedings were to be scheduled for his first appearance shortly, the sheriff said today.

How Mandy Courson died has not been revealed. Deloach said state crime lab autopsy results are pending.

Jonathan Courson had told lawmen that two black males broke into the Courson home on Corey Street in Baxley at about 4 a.m. Friday and tied him and his wife up. Deloach said that Courson maintained that at some time during the alleged home invasion, his wife was killed.

The couple's 2-year-old daughter was at home asleep in another bedroom and was not injured, Deloach said.

The sheriff said earlier in the week that no shots were fired at the house, which is located in an upscale neighborhood.
