THREE CORLEWS LOSE LIVES
2-CAR ACCIDENT SATURDAY

Three generations of the Corlew family were killed and another man seriously injured in a flaming two-car accident Saturday evening in Nester Township in Roscommon County.

Killed were Max Corlew Sr., 52, of Gladwin, his son, Max Jr., 31, of Clio and his son, Max III, 3, according to investing officers from the Houghton Lake State Police Post. Seriously injured in the crash was William D. Bright, 26, of Flint, they said.

Officers said the Corlew car, driven by Max St., was traveling west on Greenwood Road when it was struck broadside by Bright who was heading south on Nolan Road. Apparently Bright failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Nolan with Greenwood, they reported. The accident occurred about 5:40 p.m.

The elder Corlews were thrown approximately a 100 feet from their car, by force of the crash, into some young pine trees. The youngster was found by passersby beside the wrecked car and pulled away after it caught fire. It is not known if Bright was thrown out of his vehicle or was able to get out on his own or with the aid of other motorists, officers said.

Both vehicles caught fire following the accident. Bright's car completely burned and the Corlew car, which was smashed flat, partially burned, it was reported. The Roscommon Township Fire Department extinguished the fires.

Bright was brought to the Gladwin Area Hospital and given emergency treatment before being transferred to the Midland Hospital with severe head injuries and possible back injuries. Following surgery Saturday night, he was listed in serious condition, State Police said. The Corlews were pronounced dead at the scene by the Roscommon County coroner.

The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed against Bright, yet, police said.

Funeral services for the Corlews are being held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home, Gladwin. The obituaries are on page 2, of this section.
