Birth: Apr. 8, 1757
Death: 1833

Jane Meriwether Dabney of Albemarle County, Virginia was the daughter of Elizabeth Thorton and Thomas Meriwether. Jane was called “pretty Jane Meriwether by Gov. Gilmer…[she was the] beauty of the circle in which she moved, very pretty, very rich, and very much courted.” ( Jane was born after her father’s death and thus, was not left a portion of his estate in his will. She was an aunt of Meriwether Lewis, who in conjunction with Colonel Clark, conducted their celebrated expedition.
Miss Meriwether married Samuel Dabney on February 4, 1775, and their union produced thirteen children, one of whom, Richard Dabney, a poet, died in the Richmond Theatre fire. They resided by Cub Creek in Louisa County, Virginia. Samuel died relatively young in 1798, making it difficult for his wife to maintain and educate their large family. Jane was greatly assisted by her brother-in-law, Colonel Charles Dabney.
