~ CIVIL WAR VETERAN ~

Romeo H. Campbell was born in Durand, Illinois, Sept. 15, 1844, and passed away on April 10, 1900, at Battle Creek, Iowa. He was a Civil War Veteran. Burial was at Ida Grove, Iowa, Cemetery. Funeral services were held at the family home.

He enlisted in Co. H, 15 Illinois Infantry, son of Jeremiah Campbell and Cynthia Elizabeth Hoyt of Illinois.

He grew up in the town of Pecatonica, Illinois. In the spring of 1868, he came West, locating in Ida County, Iowa, a true pioneer settler. He broke prairie with a yoke of oxen, buying land along the Battle Creek stream from the Iowa Railroad Land Co., paying $5 per acre.

He married Hattie Powell in 1873 who was living in Ida Grove with an aunt and uncle. She was the daughter of Austin Fisher, a Civil War Veteran. They had 7 children, Powell, Frank, Ed H., Jed H., Byrdena, Beryl, and Bee.

Romeo was assisting his men load hogs to take to market, and while doing so, bruised the palm of his right hand, and in a short time blood poison set in. Along with a diabetic condition, all the skilled medical attention couldn't save him.

The wife, one daughter and 4 sons survive. Ed and Jed practiced law in Battle Creek, Iowa, for over 50 years.
