Lowell M. Kirtley (b. October 15, 1899), was the only child of Charles Otto and Grace Emily (McClintick) Kirtley. As a young man, Lowell Kirtley was one of entral Indiana's outstanding athletes. He was a member of the 1916 Lizton High School track team that won the Hendricks County track meet. Lowell won the 100-yard dash with a time of 11 seconds and the 220-yard dash in 25.3 seconds. He also placed second in the shot put. Lowell - or Bill, as he was called - also played baseball and basketball. and was a member of the Lizton team that advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" in the 1917 Indiana State Basketball Tournament.

Lowell Kirtley graduated from Lizton High School in 1918 and was a veteran of World War I. He graduated from Purdue University's School of Engineering in 1923.

On June 7, 1924, Lowell Kirtley married Doris Patterson (B. Sept. 1, 1901 in Hendricks County). She was a daughter of James William Otis and Lelah Von (Isley) Patterson. They were the parents of three children: Patricia Jeanne (b. March 9, 1926 at Lizton), Robert Wayne (b. April 8, 1929 in Howard County) and Mary Ann (b. 1937 in Danville).

Lowell was employed by the Kentucky and Indiana Highway Departments until 1928,when he turned to a teaching career. He taught at Burlington High School in Howard County, Indiana until 1930 when he came to Pittsboro High School to coach all sports and teach mathematics, shop and mechanical drawing. He later taught at Danville and Clayton, and returned to Pittsboro where he retired in the fall of 1964.

During World War II, Lowell was a defense worker at Allison's, working the 4 p.m. to midnight shift and teaching during the daytime.

Lowell Kirtley died on Feb. 2, 1965 and was buried at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery at Lizton.
